With a Agent Carter TV Series in development, it seemed like an opportune moment to review the ‘One Shot’ pilot.
In the climatic scenes of Captain America: The First Avenger, we all felt the devastation of watching Agent Peggy Carter experiencing Captain Steve Rogers plummet into the Arctic ocean; just as we felt the overwhelming grief once the awakened Cap realised that he may have outlived everyone he loved. That yawning historical gap is a big question mark in the unfolding Marvel cinematic timeline.
Regular executive producer of the Marvel flicks Joe Esposito gets behind the lens again (his first effort Item 44 was a special feature on The Avengers home entertainment release) for the latest Marvel One Shot Agent Carter, piecing together what Peggy did after the war. We begin in Shield, in an office designed for the 50s capitalist drone and the wardrobe borrowing heavily from Mad Men where the radiant Agent Carter is the lone female wolf in the drab boys club. After being constantly overlooked, a chance late night in the office leads to her getting a chance to prove herself.
It is refreshing in the overwhelming sausage fest of comic book cinema that female characters are getting a chance to be explored and it makes perfect sense that a warrior women gets to come home and mix it with the males. It’s a single idea that would require more narrative meat for a larger film sized adaptation but the ight running time ensures that it doesn’t outstay its welcome.
The scope is small and the Marvel machine is in pole position for tremendous production design, no matter the size of the production.
Agent Carter far exceeds its predecessor Item 44 because we care about Peggy and the audience is curious to see more. Viva la One Shot.
