Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Winners

jennifer-lawrence-lupita-nyongo-sag-awards-2014

Focusing on the film winners here, Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), perhaps the night’s biggest surprise, and Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) became favourites for Oscar glory. Cate has no contention. Leto looks to have it sewn up too. Will Nyong’o hold off Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence, and can McConaughey beat out Leonardo DiCaprio (not SAG nominated), his closest threat for an Oscar? American Hustle’s Best Ensemble victory also strengthened its stead in the Oscar race, firmly in contention for Best Picture. 12 Years A Slave had four nominations, but only Nyong’o represented.

What a moment this is for young Nyong’o, whose debut performance has been receiving all these accolades. But what a night for McConaughey, who has returned from a lengthy stint in the romcom wilderness with powerful force. He has owned the screen over the last two years, and I feel like his brilliant but overlooked work in Killer Joe, Magic Mike, The Paperboy and Mud has been leading to this. I still haven’t seen Dallas Buyers Club but I have no doubt that his performance is exemplary.
