Comment: MIND MELT
Upstream Color has been electrifying audiences at Sundance and film festivals around the world, and now Sydneysiders have a unique chance to talk to one of modern cinema’s most fascinating filmmakers, Shane Carruth, on August 14.
Fans of his first mind-bending time-travel film, ‘Primer’ know just how remarkable his vision is. With ‘Upstream Color’, he has created a more straight forward story, but in doing so, gives the audience plenty to mull over, with a story that delves into mind control, strange blue orchids, doomed love, souls, worm-surgery, pigs and much, much more. You will walk away filled with wonder – and questions. This is a masterpiece of filmmaking, and Shane Carruth directed, produced, wrote, composed, edited and acted in it. He’s also distributing it in the US, to great success.
If you’re an aspiring filmmaker, film buff or just sick of Hollywood pap, this is one Q&A you don’t want to miss!

Shane Carruth was inspired by Robert Rodriguez’s ‘El Mariachi’ to create his first low-budget ($7000) film, ‘Primer’ (2004), which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, and a host of other awards. It’s now considered a classic of the time travel genre. He worked with Rian (‘Brick’) Johnson on ‘Looper’, consulting on the film.
He’s a former software engineer and has degree in mathematics, and brings a unique approach (“not a molecule of Hollywood touched this film”) to feature filmmaking – directing, writing, acting in, producing, composing and editing his work.
Upstream Color releases in Australia on August 22.
