If you heard a loud explosion at the end of last week, that was me. Sorry about that. I’d just seen the full trailer for The Master and felt the same way Homer Simpson did when he realised he was getting a baby girl and a free Krusty burger on the very same day. Gush!
“I am a writer, a doctor, a nuclear physicist, a theoretical philosopher but above all I am a man, just like you.” – Lancaster Dodd.
What do we know from the trailer? It offers a glimpse into the powerful influence Lancaster Dodd (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) must have over everyone he meets and hints at hiding something deep under his skin. In turn, we get to properly meet Freddie Sutton (Joaquin Phoenix), a man who seems desperate to connect with someone and receive direction in his life. The scene the above quote is taken from displays it all, from Dodd’s confident posture to Sutton’s nervous laugh, as if this were all too good to be true.
In short, the coupling couldn’t be more perfect.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s (There Will Be Blood) ‘The Master’ – latest is loosely based on the beginnings of scientology (or rumoured to be) – will be released October 12.
